the flow method

Our Signature Interior Design Process

At Form + Flow, our interior design process — called The Flow Method — transforms what can feel overwhelming into a guided, intentional journey. Whether for residential homes or commercial spaces, this framework brings clarity, structure, and beauty to every stage of design.

the flow method — our interior design process

  • Phase I — Intake & Concept Development

We begin with a thoughtful intake to understand your lifestyle, goals, and aesthetic vision. From there, we translate your story into concept layouts, curated mood boards, and 3D renderings. This foundation ensures the design direction feels both personal and practical.

  • Phase II — Design Sessions & Documentation

Through collaborative sessions and curated mood boards, we refine your vision into detailed plans and elevations. Every finish, fixture, and material is documented with precision — including lighting and cabinetry — giving your builder a clear roadmap.

  • Phase III — Sourcing & Construction Oversight

We curate and source furnishings, finishes, and fixtures with intention. Our San Diego interior design studio manages procurement and oversees construction with site visits and contractor coordination, ensuring your project flows seamlessly and the design intent is preserved.

  • Phase IV — Delivery: Furnishing & Installation

We complete the process with installation and styling. Furniture, textiles, art, and accessories are placed with care, creating a space that blends function with beauty — a home or workplace that feels unmistakably yours.

  • Phase V — Final Walkthrough & Time to Enjoy

A shared walkthrough to ensure every detail is complete, followed by care guidance and resources so you can fully enjoy your new space.

why our process works

The Flow Method reduces overwhelm and replaces it with clarity. Every detail is INTENTIONAL; every choice connected to your story. By following this framework, our clients experience design as it should be: seamless, collaborative, and transformative.

FAQs

How long does the interior design process take?

Every project is unique, but most major residential interior design projects take 3–6 months, while larger commercial or hospitality projects may extend longer, depending on the scope. The Flow Method keeps timelines clear by breaking the process into structured phases — so you always know what to expect.

What’s included in design documentation?

Our design documentation package provides everything your builder needs to execute with precision. This includes scaled plans, elevations, cabinetry drawings, lighting and electrical layouts, and a finishes schedule. Every detail is documented to protect your vision during construction.

Do you coordinate with my builder?

Yes. We collaborate closely with your contractor and trades throughout the construction period. Our team conducts site visits and progress reviews to ensure the design intent is upheld and to resolve issues before they become delays.

Do you handle furniture procurement and trade discounts?

Absolutely. We curate and source furnishings, fixtures, and accessories on your behalf. As part of this process, you gain access to our trade discounts (often 10–30%), which many clients find offsets design fees. We manage orders and logistics so your space comes together seamlessly.

What happens at the final walkthrough?

The final walkthrough is the celebratory close of the project. We walk through the completed space together, confirm every detail, and provide styling guidance and care notes. This ensures you feel confident and ready to enjoy your new home or workplace.

In most cases, we also schedule a professional photoshoot during or after installation. This documents the project for our portfolio and marketing, and many clients love having the images as a keepsake of their transformation.
